As the next partial government shutdown looms, more and more Democrats are showing signs of wavering in their support for the ‘Pelosi Resistance’ movement! In fact, a number of Democrats, and not just moderates are expressing their shift in support for a border wall, or at least some sort of barrier.

Previously, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had maintained control and were able to hold the Party line. However, in recent weeks, as President Trump has shown that he is willing to compromise and work across the aisle, Democrats were left looking as if they cared more about holding the anti-Trump resistance line than doing what is in the best interest of their constituents.

Now, reports are coming in that show that many of the Democrats are feeling the burn, as their constituents are angry that they are putting the party over the people!

Before the month-long partial government shutdown, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer showed complete control over his members, despite many campaigning on a pledge to support a border wall! Also, Pelosi pledged that she wouldn’t appropriate a dollar to a protective wall along the southern border, even calling it “immoral”!

Now, as the President is only asking for $5.7 billion to build on the border, and the fact that the Congress has allotted hundreds of millions of dollars to build protective walls and barriers in foreign nations around the world, a large contingent of Democrat leaders, including some high up in the Party are beginning to waver!

Reports indicate that the White House has already begun to see cracks in their ‘resistance’, and the President is actively seeking to exploit those cracks and bring Democrats on board, creating a bi-partisan Congressional coalition to finally fund the wall.

For example, Freshman Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) told CNN last week that she would

“vote for some money for physical barriers.”

Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) conceded that

“the wall is not in itself a bad idea”

Also, although Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL) had previously admonished the President over the border wall funding, she more recently stated on CNN that…

“If we have a partial wall, if we have fencing, if we have technology used to keep our borders safe, all of that is fine.”

Rep. John Garamendi (D-CA) also said

“Democrats have repeatedly said that we will support border security, we will support all of its elements including fences. There may be places where everybody will agree, ‘Yeah, a wall makes sense there.”

Sen. Angus King (I-ME) said that he believes the current debate in Congress is a full wall versus open borders, despite the fact that the President has made it abundantly clear that it isn’t a wall from coast to coast, due to natural barriers already in place.  For example, the White House’s border wall proposal includes fencing in highly-trafficked areas, concrete walls in areas prone to flooding, drone technology along the border, and repairs to already existing fencing currently in place.

Several Republicans including Republican Virginia Rep. Denver Riggleman alleged that there are even many more Democrats who privately admit that they support a physical barrier, but many of them don’t want to cross Party leadership!

Now, even high ranking Democrat Congressional leaders are showing signs that the tide is turning for the battle for border security and a wall or protective structure. In fact, high ranking Democratic Senator Mark Warner tried to play the victim in an interview on NPR this morning. He said that the White House is not negotiating in “good faith” when it comes to border security. He then went on to claim that he had supported physical barriers all along and that the Democrats have been in favor of barriers all along, despite the tremendous attacks they hurled at the President by calling him a racist, xenophobe, and criminal, or their attack on a wall or barrier as “immoral”! Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) said…

“No, listen, I’ve said repeatedly that increased border security, even if some of that means a barrier, but it ought to be based upon the experts who know how to spend funds at the border — not some arbitrary number picked by the president.”

On Fox News, Warner said…

“I know we’re going to have to add additional border security … We’ve got about 700 miles of existing fencing. Where folks say we need additional barrier protections, I’m all for it.”

Still, although signals indicate that the Democrats are beginning to admit their wrongs, it will be a tall order for the President to sway them into supporting a border wall or barrier! Throughout the week, the President is slated to continue meeting with Congressional leaders in an effort to secure the border and fund a physical wall or barrier. House and Senate Democratic leaders have already signaled that they will not budge or compromise, and Pelosi continues to indicate that she will not give a dollar! Therefore, the real test is about to be seen, as Pelosi and Schumer use their power to put immense pressure on their Party’s Congressional members. In the meantime, President Trump and Republicans will also apply pressure on Democrats, especially as one of the largest migrant caravans is heading towards the United States yet again, while thousands are waiting at the border, setting up an even larger national emergency in the United States!
